PARTICIPATE

Thanks to the help of many supporters, we were able to successfully realise our eighth project. 64 football children from St Mary’s Primary School in Techiman, Ghana, received brand new football shoes and a backpack. A further 45 football-loving girls and boys received second-hand football boots. They all love football – Ghana’s number one national sport – and often played with ill-fitting shoes and some even barefoot, but always with a lot of fun.

During our last visit to Ghana, we realised that the kids were playing with poor footwear and spontaneously decided on this project. We are convinced that sport of any kind, but football in particular, makes children and young people strong for life. Not every child will become a professional footballer, but good qualities such as team spirit, concentration and, above all, perseverance – getting up again after defeats and carrying on – are learnt. Having their own, well-fitting football boots could fulfil a formative dream for the children, boosting their sporting performance and self-confidence.

To find out what their needed, Kofi, Anne and Kelvin asked all the children on their last visit to Ghana to draw their feet on a piece of paper and add their name, age and gender. Based on this information, we obtained quotes for a total of 64 football shoes to find the best price and calculate the cost per kid. We considered that the children would grow in the period between drawing and handover and adjusted the shoe sizes accordingly.

All the images of the kids’ feet were uploaded to our website and the project was publicised via various communication channels, but above all through personal commitment. In this way, we were able to find a supporter for each of the 64 children. Each supporter was able to choose and support a football-loving kid. If permitted, we displayed the name of the supporter on our website. Those who preferred to remain anonymous were of course given discretion. A donation receipt is available on request.

In March 2024, Anne, Kofi, Kelvin, and Nils traveled to Ghana, carrying football boots, goalkeeper gloves, and backpacks. Together with the local team, they organized a personal handover to the football kids at St. Mary Primary School in Techiman. On March 30, numerous children and their families gathered for the ceremonial handover, which was celebrated with great joy and gratitude. The emotional ceremony and the subsequent football match were documented to share the success of this special day. Learn more about the trip in our blog article.

The date has not yet been finalised, but an event is planned to report on our trip and the handover of the football kits to the children. We will be serving small Ghana snacks and cool drinks as well as being available for questions and suggestions. Of course, African music should not be missing. That’s why we’ll play music for those who want to dance with us. Our aim is to thank all supporters and celebrate the joint project.
